October Newsletter

Laura's Corner

Can you believe October is already here? Mother Nature has forgotten those of us who prefer cooler weather, but I am doing my best to be patient with her.

On our schedule for this month is a Quilts of Valor (QOV) retreat, Monday, October 13 through Thursday, October 16, for $165 per person, with the option of early arrival Sunday evening at 8pm for an additional $30. You would bring your own project to work on, typically a QOV. On Tuesday evening that week, the Michigan Coordinator will present four veterans with a quilt. Call our office at 989-845-2159 to register.

In March, 2026, we will hold a collage class with Mandy Manno, advanced certified Laura Heine instructor. This class will feature a large design of the American flag. You will be able to get it done and displayed in your home in time to celebrate our country’s 250-year anniversary all summer! Patterns and our kits are available in the quilt shop and you can call to register for the class at 989-845-2159.

We are open to class ideas. If you have a favorite technique or teacher, let us know!

Barb's Garden

Took a walk around the garden and it's a nice reminder that fall is such a beautiful time of year in Michigan! Mums are taking the spotlight, garden grasses are spectacular and then a few unexpected flower are to be seen! My dilemma is the Boston ferns. Since they did so well, one is on its second year, do I want the hassle of a messy house plant.

Diane's Book Nook

The Searcher by Tana French

Cal Hooper is a retired Chicago police officer who needs a change in his life. His marriage is broken, his relationship with his only daughter is strained, and he thinks buying a fixer-upper in a small Irish village will settle his fears about himself.

Young Trey Reddy is obviously from a poor family who regularly ditches school and lives a very rough life. Cal invites Trey to assist with his projects, viewing it as an opportunity to provide guidance toward learning and personal development.  No one mentions (deliberately?) that Trey is really a girl who is looking for answers about her brother.

The investigation that follows takes him strikingly close to the police work he was so desperate to escape. Cal finds that the local language barely resembles the English he thought he’d find and only adds to the difficulty of his quest.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am currently reading book #2 of the series, The Hunter.
